Questions
How is the price per person worked out?
We take the full price for the van or bus and divide it by the number of people in your group. A Sprinter van for 2 hours in Austin is $300, so 14 friends pay about $21.43 each. Bigger groups pay less each.
Do we share the ride with strangers?
No. The van or bus is only for your group.
How do we pay?
Reserving on CarsTXT is free. You pay the company directly, and your group can split the cost any way you like. Tolls, parking, extra stops, extra time and gratuity are agreed with the company.
Who drives?
Independent, licensed party bus, limo, charter and shuttle companies. When a company takes your trip, we email you its name, phone, address, permit and insurance details.

- Get commercial auto insurance. Personal car insurance does not cover paid trips. Vans for 15 or fewer people: at least $250,000 when you sign up and $500,000 within 60 days. Buses: Texas requires $500,000 for 16 to 26 people and $5,000,000 for 27 or more. TxDMV insurance rules
- Get a USDOT number from the FMCSA. You need it to carry paying passengers across state lines (vehicles for more than 8 people), and Texas asks for it when you register. Do I need a USDOT number?
- Register with TxDMV if any vehicle is built for more than 15 people, counting the driver. You get a TxDMV number. Get a TxDMV number
- Get your city permit. Most big cities license limo, charter and party bus companies and their vehicles: AustinHoustonDallasSan Antonio Other cities: call city hall and ask about "vehicle for hire" or limousine permits.
- Check your drivers. Every driver needs a valid license, a clean record and a background check, plus a city chauffeur permit where the city asks for one. Only bus drivers (16 or more people) need a CDL with passenger (P) endorsement and a DOT medical card.
- Put the CarsTXT decal on, then sign up below.
A "not for hire" sign does not make paid rides legal. If you take money for rides, you need the insurance and permits above.
